This uprising took
place in the midst of political upheaval in the capital in 1958. The
instability of the government, the problem of corruption, the debates in the
Constituent Assembly, as well as the conflict in the community about the
conception of the President.
On January 9, 1958 a
meeting was held in Dareh River, West Sumatera, which was attended by Lieutenant
Colonel Ahmad Husein, Lt. Col. Sumual, Colonel Simbolon, Colonel Dachlan
Djambek, and Colonel Zulkifli Lubis. While the civil parties present, among
others, is M.Natsir, Sjarif Usman, Burhanuddin Harahap, and Sjafruddin
Prawinegara. During the meeting discussed about forming a new government as
well as matters related to it.
The next day on
February 10, 1958 held a mammoth rally at Padang, Lieutenant Colonel Achmad
Husein in his speech at the rally gave an ultimatum to the Central Government.
The ultimatum
demanded:
Within 5x24 hours
Juanda Cabinet handed over credentials to the President or the President revoke
the mandate of the Cabinet Juanda.
President
commissioned Drs.Moh.Hatta and Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX to form a cabinet
Zaken.
Asked the President
in order to return to his position as the constitutional president.
Session of the
Council of Ministers on February 11 decision to reject the ultimatum and sacked
with no respect Lieutenant Colonel Achmad Husein, Colonel Zulkifli Lubis,
Colonel Dachlan Djambek, and Colonel Simbolon. Military Area Command Central
Sumatra is then frozen and placed directly under the Chief of Staff.
The uprising peaked
when, on February 15, 1958 announcing the establishment of Achmad Husein
"Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Indonesia" (PRRI)
following the formation of his cabinet with Sjafruddin Prawinegara as Prime
Minister.
PRRI proclamation
immediate acclaim in Eastern Indonesia. On February 17, 1958 Lt. Col. DJ Somba,
commander of Military Region of North and Central Sulawesi, declare themselves
broke relations with the central government and fully support the PRRI. Sulawesi
movement is known as the Charter of Struggle Movement Permesta or Universe.
With the
proclamation of PRRI in Sumatera, followed by Permesta in eastern Indonesia, the
Government decided not to let this issue drag on and get it over with the force
of arms.
(PRRI crushing
operation)
To quell the
rebellion PRRI in Sumatera, immediately prepared a combined operation consisting
of elements of land, sea, and air.
First launched
Operation Resolute led by Lt. Col. Kaharuddin Nasution to master the Riau area.
The consideration is to secure foreign oil installations in the region and to
prevent foreign intervention on the pretext of saving the citizens and hers.
Pekanbaru city capitulated on May 12, 1958.
To secure areas of
West Sumatera launched Operation August 17 under the command of Colonel Ahmad
Yani. On 17 Apri in Padang can be controlled by the forces of the Armed Forces
and on 4 May following Bukittinggi.
Meanwhile in the
North Sumatera region launched Operation Saptamarga under the leadership of
Brigadier General Djatikusumo. For South Sumatera region launched Operation
Sadar under Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Ibnu Sutowo.
PRRI leadership
finally gave up one by one. On May 29, 1961 officially reported Achmad Husein
himself with his troops, followed by PRRI other figures, both military and
civilian.
In the
counter-insurgency effort, it is worth noting those in areas of rebellion
remain loyal to the Government, to Saptamarga, and Oath Soldier, among others:
Commissioner of Police Kaharuddin, Dt Rangkajo Bases and Major Nurmathias in
West Sumatera, Lt. Col. Djamin Ginting, and Lt. Col. Supposition Makmur in North
Sumatera, Lieutenant Colonel Harun Sohar in South Sumaetra.
Thus the short
history of Revolt PRRI In West Sumatera Against the sovereignty of the Republic
of Indonesia, which we got from various sources in Indonesian history. Thanks
